Five records in the book of Acts when those that believed spoke in tongues, pt-1 (Holy Spirit Class - 1967 - Session - 4)

1.   We learned from Acts, chapter 2, in the original outpouring, in 
verses 1 to 4, that; on the day of Pentecost, these twelve apostles were 
filled with the power from on high, clothed with this power from on 
high, which is the new birth, the holy spirit, Christ in you.  And when 
they were filled, it says, "and they spoke in tongues."  That's what it 
said in Acts 2.  And then, you'll remember, there were only Jews on the 
day of Pentecost that received.  

2.   A number of years later, because of the persecution that had ensued 
within the city of Jerusalem, because of the increase of Christian 
believers, Philip went down to Samaria.  This is an enlargement.  The 
Samaritans were disliked by the Jews.  Philip goes down to Samaria and 
he preaches Christ unto them.  And those who have been influenced by 
spiritualism, and lived under devil spirits, and been under the control 
of a man operated by devil spirits, they get born again.  And Simon, the 
sorcerer himself, gets born again of God's Spirit.  

     And when these people in Samaria were born again, it says, "and 
Simon saw."  Simon saw--you cannot see spirit, what did Simon see?  

3.   We'll go to the next record, in Acts, chapter 9, the third great 
record in God's wonderful, matchless word.  In this chapter, it's the 
apostle Paul.  Paul who, when he was on the road to Damascus, got born 
again.  And Ananias, just a simple disciple -- just a simple disciple, 
not a head of the church from Jerusalem, no Peter, no John, no bishop, 
no top echelon brass, nope -- just a simple disciple.  Laid his hands on 
the apostle, Paul, he got healed, physically, and, according to I 
Corinthians chapter 14, verse 18, the apostle Paul says, "I speak in 
tongues more than ye all."

Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?

And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?

How the Adversary uses matter and energy - Earl Burton

If we're in that position, we're far above anything that the adversary can pull off. It's a real terrific thing because of the power that we've got if we'll use it, if we'll do something with it. My main thinking on this in presenting it to people and even studying it out for myself was to see that it's realistic, it's possible, it happens.

And then to see how it happens so that it's not such a frightful thing in a person's mind because so many times the adversary uses ignorance or wrong teaching to put fear in people. Now we understand, now we know some of these principles that possibly explain things. And now we can see the greater power of God in our lives, God in Christ in us, the hope of glory.

And because of that, we can go out with boldness and face the adversary in any situation, understanding some of his operation and being confident in the power of God.

Elijah - Elisha

And as Elijah went by plowing, he just took off his mantle and threw it over the top of him. Because the mantle is significant of the transfer of power. And he left the oxen, Elisha left the oxen, and followed after, ran after Elijah, and said, let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I'll follow thee.

 

In other words, say goodbye to daddy and mommy. And he said unto him, go back again, for what have I done to thee? And he returned back from him, took a yoke of oxen, slew them, boiled their flesh with the instruments and the oxen, and gave them to the people, and they did eat. Then he arose and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.

 

And wherever Elijah went, Elisha went with him, carried his suitcase, his briefcase, did his secretarial work, wrote his letters, did his telephones, sent his cablegrams. But he was always with the man of God, being taught, learning, being instructed. And Ben-Hadad, the king of Syria, gathered all his hosts together.

 

The Adversary's desire for worship

And the thing that makes it so interesting is when Jesus Christ was here, the adversary tempted him. And every time the adversary tempted him, Jesus reciprocated by quoting him the word. He offered him all the kingdoms of the world if he would but bow down and worship him.

All the kingdoms, everything. And the reason he did this is because Jesus Christ replaced this second in command. And since Lucifer is that adversary who is the devil and Satan who got kicked out, who lost all that stuff.

And this one, Jesus Christ now is second in command. Who do you think he would be after? Jesus Christ. That's why it says he crucified him.

But had he known, had he known, had he known he never would have crucified the Lord of glory. Now I'll tell you why. Because every one of you born again of God's spirit are his brother.

The works that I do, ye shall what? Everyone is his brother. Had he known it, he wouldn't have crucified him. Boy, if this ever hits you, you'll walk 10 feet tall.
